Affect vs effect

In their simplest form:

  • Affect (verb) means to produce a change or influence something

  • Effect (noun) indicates an event whereby a change has occurred

A good reminder is:

A is for action

E is for end result

So, let’s look at some examples:

The sun affects (verb) my mood.

My mood is the effect (noun / end result) of the sun shining.

Playing too much Fortnite can affect my son’s mood.

The effect of playing too much Fortnite is a moody child.

A = Action

E = End result
